Camping Treat that will keep them asking for S’more!!!

You can’t go camping in North America and not come across campers making S’mores – everyone’s favourite childhood treat. This traditional campfire treat is very, very popular and consists of a toasted marshmallow and a layer of chocolate sandwiched between two pieces of graham crackers. The name comes from the frequent requests for “some more” whenever they are made. Would you believe that there is even a National S’mores Day celebrated yearly in August in the USA!!! How’s that for great marketing!!

Now we don’t have graham crackers here in Australia, or the Hersheys special chocolate squares bar made just to fit a cracker, but we can adapt. Digestive biscuits or shredded wheatmeal biscuits work well, or you could experiment and use something else you like better, and as with the recipe below you can cheat and use a jar of Nutella (a chocolate hazelnut spread) as a substitute for the chocolate. Traditionally though you need a packet of chocolate squares that are relatively thin. The hot marshmallow melts or softens the chocolate and you have a gooey, chocolately biscuit which is very delicious!!

A simple but delicious treat that kids will just love to make on their next camping trip (or even at home).

Makes 10

1 pkt plain digestive biscuits (or similar)
1 or 2 pkts thin milk chocolate squares OR 1 small jar Nutella chocolate spread
1 pkt marshmallows (If you can get the ‘giant’ marshmallows, they’ll work a treat)

If using Nutella, spread the nutella onto one digestive biscuit and keep one plain.

Skewer one or two marshmallows onto a metal skewer and gently toast over warm coals until golden brown and slightly gooey – you’ve got to be able to get them off the skewers and onto the biscuits, so don’t over do the toasting.

Be careful handling the toasted marshmallows – they will be very hot, on the outside and inside!!!

Place the now toasted marshmallow on top of the chocolate or Nutella and place another biscuit on top, creating a S’more sandwich, and enjoy!!

Another more ‘modern’ way to make S'mores, is to assemble the biscuits with the marshmallows and chocolate and wrap each made biscuit in some foil and place that either in the fire on some embers, or in a hot oven (preheated to 180°C) and bake for 5 to 6 minutes or until the marshmallows and chocolate have heated and softened.

Or, if you are at home you can even put the biscuit together with the marshmallow and chocolate and microwave on a high setting for about 20 seconds or until the marshmallow has softened.

Handy Hint: (by Sarah-Jane Kelly on Facebook) -

"They are better with chocolate digestives ... melts better than a chunk of chocolate. "

A great idea. It would work really well!! Thanks Sarah-jane.

Camp Oven S'mores Dip

This is another way to eat S'mores, using one baking dish and your camp oven.

1 cup of milk chocolate chips or melting chocolate
2 tblspns milk
1 cup marshmallows
extra marshmallows for topping
plain digestive biscuits (or similar) for dipping

In a baking dish, suitable to fit into your camp oven (or oven), place the chocolate and milk and 1 cup of marshmallows and stir over a medium heat until melted and smooth.

Top with marshmallows - enough to cover the chocolate mix.
Place the dish on a trivet in a preheated camp oven, put on the camp oven lid and add some hot coals on the lid only and leave just long enough to brown the tops of the marshmallows and to slightly soften them.

Serve with biscuits to scroop up the chocolate and marshmallows.

If making at home, you can brown the top of the marshmallows under a grill.
